Measles – A virus that causes fever, cough, and a rash. It can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, brain swelling and permanent brain damage. Rarely measles can be fatal.

Mumps – A viral infection that causes swollen neck glands and fever. In about 10% of cases, it can lead to brain inflammation. In 15–30% of males past puberty, it can cause swollen and painful testes. Infection during early pregnancy may cause miscarriage.

Rubella (German Measles) - A virus that causes rash, fever, and swollen glands. If a pregnant woman gets rubella, her baby can develop serious birth defects, such as hearing loss, blindness, intellectual disability, or heart problems.

These are 3 serious viral diseases typically spread through coughs and sneezes with measles being especially contagious. Just being in the same room as an infected person can lead to transmission.

The MMR Vaccine

The MMR Vaccine was developed to combat all three viral diseases and made widely available.

  • Public Immunisation Clinics: Operated by local councils or community centres to provide free or low-cost vaccines.

  • General Practitioners (GPs): Most provide the MMR vaccine.

  • Pharmacies: Many offer vaccination

  • Schools and Universities: Some run vaccination programs for students.

The MMR vaccine is given as a single injection, usually in the upper arm and given in two doses. The first dose is recommended at 12 months of age and the second dose at 18 months or before starting school. Adults who missed their childhood vaccinations can also get the MMR vaccine.

If unsure of your vaccination status, you can check your immunisation records through the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).
